Pete Thompson-
Senior Instructor in Go-ju Ryu Karate and Ryu Kyu Kobudo
Bio:
I started training in Go-Ryu Karate in 1988 aged 9 in Weymouth and Dorchester under Sensei’s Mark Caples and Craig Nevitt. In 1994 aged 15 I was graded to 1st Dan Black belt and later that year I qualified as an assistant instructor.
In 1998 after gaining my 3rd Dan black belt my instructor left the club so I took over the dojo’s in Weymouth and Dorchester and added to them my own club on Portland to form Wessex Karate Academy. A few years later a club in Milborne St Andrew was added.
I am currently the senior instructor of Wessex Karate Academy which has over 90 members which boasts 20 black belts and over 20 GKI national champions. I hold the ranks of 6th Dan in Go-Ju Ryu karate and 2nd Dan in Ryu Kyu Kobudo Shimbukan (traditional okinawan weapoanry)
I have also competed and coached with both UK and England teams.
In 2013 I formed Wessex Traditional Martial Arts Ltd to be the company in charge of a full time centre for the Karate club and other forms of traditional martial arts clubs and training.

A few questions with kyoshinkai karate is there sparing and competitions and would I be able to train in the gym 5 times a week?
Also in go-ju ryu karate is there competitions and 5 times a week training?
Hi Charly, currently you can there are two Kyokushinkai classes and 4 adult Go-Ju Ryu classses you can do at this venue. With the Go-Ju Ryu we also have a Dojo in Dorchester which you can also train at for no extra cost on the monthly fee. Both styles do sparring and competitons.
